Stern Grove: San Francisco Family Portrait Photography

Most family portraits I take are families of 3-5 people, give or take. But every once in a while I get a request to photograph three generations, and it’s so much fun mixing and matching everyone to make different combinations. I like to envision how these photos will be used throughout the year for special occasions – holiday cards, anniversary gifts, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc. Considering how rare it is to have a professional family photo taken every year, I encourage my clients of all ages to take more photos with their children AND their parents. It’s even more special to have keepsake photos of kids with their grandparents, like these precious moments we captured in Stern Grove.

Rounding up three little ones AND getting their attention AND capturing their smiles is no easy task. It helps to have silly parents and aunties behind the camera! After starting out with group shots of everyone, I began to photograph the smaller family units…

Including this adorable soon-to-be-wed couple:

They took turns imitating cheesy engagement poses and these were meant to be outtakes, but their smiles were so genuine I had to include these shots!

I also photographed each child according to their moods at the time. His expressions were adorable.

Next we had the siblings and significant others. (The kids? The adults? The middle generation!) Each couple had a turn in front of the camera:

Somebody decided he wanted to join in. :)

The success of these photos was all thanks to Aunty Jess, who exerted every last bit of her energy creating an impromptu puppet show for the kids. She did a terrific job (as you can see by their expressions).

Behind the scenes with Uncle Kevin!
Good team work, everyone! In the end we captured not just one but several beautiful group shots. :) This was just one of many awesome family sessions – more to come!
